Outdoor Sketching Round two and Three

So after my first attempt at outdoor sketching, it took a lot longer for me to get out again. The month of March signalled a change in seasons and with it a cold. I ended up looking after sick ones and then of course I got sick. Some positives of this month was that the weather was starting to cool down and was a lot more pleasant being outdoors- a nicer temperature. I ended up going outdoor sketching twice this month. The first time was what I call a success and the second time was similar to the first- rushed.

I do like to sketch closer to a realistic representation of the subject matter when I am sketching but I also found I have days where I lack patience. FYI I seem to have more patience in the comfort of my own home than if I am out and about.

The first sketch I did was at a local park that has a variety of botanical subject matter but also architecture as well. I started off sitting down at a cafe that is located in one of the buildings in the park and had a coffee. I had considered drawing the flowers while having a coffee, but decided to enjoy it before going for a wander through the park. This may have helped prepare me to have the patience to draw. I went past a flower garden and then to the side of the park where I found fruit trees. Ahh! I will draw apples.

I was quite pleased with this result and I wanted to add colour, so I added this when I got home.

Here is the result:

The second attempt of outdoor sketching did not go well. Though I like drawing every other forms of botanicals, I do not particularly like drawing flowers. I definitely like looking at flowers though! I found this park to be quite busy with pedestrians and I felt watched. Something to get used to I suppose? I will definitely be getting out more regularly to draw.

Here is the result of the second outing:

I tried salvaging this drawing by adding colour but it still is an amateurish attempt.

Regardless of failures and successes getting outdoors to sketch serves two dual purposes for me. I spend time outdoors and practice art. I do not intend to also be drawing at a local park, I would also like to go out an about to urban locations to do some urban sketching.

That’s it for my short diary entry for March.
