I have been wanting to get outside more regularly again but this time bringing my sketchbook, I took a seat in a park. Originally I had intended to sketch a rose, but instead due to wet seats, a dry seat was more convientially opposite an old house. This is what I ended up sketching a couple of weeks ago. I last sketched outdoors 17 years ago when I was studying photography. I have also failed to go back outside to sketch since that time two weeks ago due to health reasons and now a sick child is what is stopping me. I have considered sketching outside at my home, but my main point was to sketch outdoors and not at home.
Anyways my first attempt did not go all too well. It started well, then I got interrupted as my mum called, during the call the heat of the sun streamed down and as it was summer it started getting really hot. After the call ended I tried to get back into sketching, noting how hot I felt, I ended up rushing it so ended up with this result. An unfinished and poorly drawn house.

Nevermind, I plan to return to outdoor sketching, the weather has turned more autumn, albeit the days are still warm to hot and alternating between hot and cold. Possibly more suitable weather to sit in and draw rather than the heat of summer. I have a list of places I want to sit and draw, so hopefully I may still capture those flowers before they disappear during winter.
At the end of the day my sketchbook often ends up being filled with a mix of unfinished drawings, rushed drawings, and finished drawings. I often treat my sketchbook as a warm up or practicing to draw new subject matter. In my opinion a sketchbook is for practice only. I know there are people out there who use a sketchbook to create finished pieces and there are people with multiple sketchbooks for different purposes. I barely touch my sketchbook often preferring loose paper to a book.
I will probably pop back with a new post if I have been successful with regular outdoor sketching.
What are your preferences for a sketchbook- do you have one? and what do you use it for?
