All the finished artworks of 2024

I really doubled down on a style I developed through the Alphabet Superset challenge. The majority are square in format. I do not know why I like drawing on a square piece of paper, but the majority of my gouache paintings this year have been square. Four artworks were part of the art challenge, and I managed to complete another eight artworks this year. Now this is in addition to other art that I created as well so a mere 11 paintings does not sound a lot in a year does it? Or maybe it does… ? This is in addition to other parts of my life.

These are all finished works so here is my year art portfolio of gouache paintings.

Rocky shores- as the name suggests this painting depicts a rocky beach, sea, clouds and vegetation. The clouds are looming in the sky as an incoming rain would arrive later that day. I use reference photos for all of my paintings and this one was taken not long (2023) after I made the decision to hand in my notice at my “career”. I painted this at the beginning of 2024.

Boat sheds- I lived in a pretty special part of the country with some pretty cool views. This one is not particularly one of the cool views depending on your preferences, but they are quirky. In real life they are painted in different colours as the Artist Hundertwasser has left behind his works in this region and many locals still decorate/commemorate the artist by copying his style.

The Cut- local to where I currently live, this art is of the cut. A cut is made through a natural land barrier and is dredged to allow ships to pass through without running aground. The alternative passage is shallow with plenty of large rocks.

Quay- I started to play more with colours here and I like the effect.

Waterfront

Marina Cafe- a very cool and popular cafe with good coffee run out of a container and located beside the marina. A nice outdoor setting to sit and drink coffee.

Sunset- named this due to the colours used on the building. This is an old utility building that juts out into the water. The same building is depicted in my work waterfront.

Harbour view- A house with a very nice view looking out towards the Whangarei Heads.

Boat sheds 2- another set of sheds from the opposite end of the first boat shed painting.

Path to the beach. A local beach close to where I live with wooden plank pathways over the sand to the beach.

Maritime Museum – just finished this month, this photo is not showing the colours in the best light. The building sits on wharf and is used for different community purposes including as a museum.

I really favoured a maritime theme to my work this past year. I may continue with this theme into the next year as it is easy to access inspiration. I live in a coastal town where the port is a fairly large employer. A town where the mountains, the sea, urbanisation, and industry all combine. I may explore other subject matter in 2025, but likely this will fall within an overarching coastal theme I think. I am not sure how much work I will complete next year, it all depends on what paid employment I end up with.

Here’s to 2024 and I hope for a peaceful 2025 for everyone. 😊
